The Stories That Send Us To War

I was not expecting Russia to invade Ukraine like this, but I had not been listening to the stories that the Russians were telling each other. Nor did I hear what Kremlin advisors were telling Putin.

These stories are what send us to war. Every war that America has ever fought, started with a story, and too many of them had little connection with reality. Look closely at other wars, and you’ll see that they too started with a story.

Worse, we have taken up story telling in our churches, without checking whether they are true.

We Chose Optimism Over Honesty

Without an honest look at what is real, there can never be a hope for the future. Never. Yes, there might be moments of accidental prosperity. From time-to-time, you might experience something above average, but you can never hold off reality.

In fact, one of the reasons why I continue to commit all of my life to Christ, is that the Bible is the clearest reflection of reality that we have. Yet, we prefer the momentary pleasures of fantasy, instead the gritty truth residing within those pages bound together and sent around the world.

We are facing the most horrific moment in a thousand years precisely because we chose optimism over honesty.

The Big Lie and Big Liars

Lies kill.

Most people don’t understand that, but it’s the truth. I’ve seen this truth with my own eyes. I’ve heard it with my own ears. And, we have spent too long, enjoying the lies that people tell.

Too many have died, and many that haven’t are walking casualties to the lies that people tell. I have friends who have suffered and died because of these lies, and I want them to stop.

Of course, they won’t stop, because the lying liars benefit too much from the lies that they tell. The question is, whether you will hold the liars accountable.

If you do, it just might save your life.

Eventually, People Wake Up – The Fourth Turning

We all love a good story – the bigger, the better. We talk about how good we are – how great our society is. And, we hire story tellers to give us those stories. Our story tellers talk to us from the television and radio. They write the stories in our newspapers, magazines and books. We send our children to school to learn the stories. We go to churches that tell us the stories we want to hear. And, we put our best story tellers in government.
